The Lansdowne Hotel Broadway, Chippendale

burger
Beef burger and chips $5.00

There are some places you go to because of the fabulous food. There are others you go to for the stellar service. And then there are those that are simply cheap.

The Lansdowne Hotel has the budget market down to a pat. Its $5 menu is its biggest drawcard. The banner out the front is three metres high, and it has always had a strong following with uni students. Head up the stairs that remind you of school, place your order at the bar, and grab a seat in the mess-hall filled with long wooden tables.

cutlery

The cutlery for your meal arrives in hermetically sealed plastic. One the one hand it feels like you're sitting on an airplane; on the other the chaotic din makes it feel like school camp.

Our group orders a selection from the $5 and $10 menus -- there's a $15 menu too for those that are really out to paint the town red.

barramundi
Barramundi with salad $10.00

The barramundi is apparently moist and tender. The difference in size between the $5 and the $10 meals is quickly apparent. The burger and the steak are both modest in size with a sparse handful of chips.

tandoori pizza
Tandoori pizza $10.00

I've gone for the tandoori pizza which is a little dry (both the chicken and the base) but it's relatively filling with a generous topping, and the yoghurt provides some much-needed refreshment.

Cheap, cheerful and great for large groups or starving students.

Having been past this place so many times when I lived in Sydney it's so nice to finally know what they have on offer! I've just been lamenting the lack of cheap pub food so this was a pleasing read.

This is completely unrelated but I thought I'd tell you that I'm off to The Apprentice this Wed for lunch. I had not heard of it before you had blogged about it and a friend of mine who went recently spoke glowingly of it so I'm feeling quite happily expectant! I'm hoping to put some photos of the meal on flickr but we'll see how the photos turn out first...I'm not really much of a photographer :)

Even if you're not a student seems like a good place when funds are low.

I went here last night with my partner so he could watch the boxing and commented that you had said it was ok food especially for the price.

I had chicken and chips and paid $1 extra for gravy and it was worth every cent (the gravy that is). It was so nice we were going to just go and order and extra portion of chips with gravy but didn't get round to it.

Also, even though it is near the uni's being 30 I still didn't feel out of place and all the staff were very friendly.

Well worth a visit - and you can sit downstairs and avoid the school canteen feel of the big tables

next time ur in the area, check out the courthouse just off King St (a bit of a local haunt shhhh!) for great cheap pub food in generous portion; sunny beer garden; friendly staff and merry patrons!
